Jephson Gardens
A little oasis in the heart of Leamington Spa, Jephson Gardens has always been a special place for me.
Nestled in the heart of Leamington Spa, this much-loved Victorian park is full of colour, beautiful gardens and tranquil waterways. It’s somewhere to escape the bustle of town, find a favourite bench, watch the ducks or simply sit and watch the world go by.
For generations, the gardens have been the backdrop to first dates, family walks, childhood adventures and countless everyday moments that become treasured memories.
For me, though, there’s another reason they’re special.
A place to return to
For many years, I lived on the other side of the world in Australia. But whenever I returned to Leamington Spa, I always found myself drawn back to Jephson Gardens.
I’d often sit there for an hour or two, watching people wander past, meeting friends, pushing prams, feeding the ducks or simply enjoying an ordinary afternoon.
Knowing I’d soon be leaving again, I found myself trying to soak up every minute. Taking in the colours, the atmosphere and that familiar feeling of being here.
There was something about the gardens that made time seem to slow down. Life carried on around me, yet for a little while everything felt still.
Now that I’ve returned to live in Leamington, those visits feel even more special. What was once a place I cherished from afar has become part of my everyday life once again.
I wanted to capture that feeling in my painting. Not just the beauty of the gardens, but the feeling of belonging, of returning, and of appreciating the simple moments that make a place feel like home.
Your Jephson Gardens story
Since creating this painting, I’ve loved hearing what Jephson Gardens means to other people.
When I take my artwork to local markets, people recognise the gardens and start sharing their memories. And I’ve discovered that, for many of us, this place holds far more than beautiful flowers and familiar paths.
One person told me:
“We courted there when we were young, we used to sit on that bench.”
Another remembered holding a memorial for their grandmother in a particular spot in the gardens.
Others tell me about their weekly walks with a baby, lunch breaks spent wandering among the trees, or taking the children to feed the ducks.
Different lives, different generations, different memories — all connected to the same place.
That’s what I love about painting places. I might start with my own memories, but everyone brings their own.
What does Jephson Gardens mean to you?
Is it somewhere you visited as a child, a favourite place to walk, somewhere you take your own children, or simply a little oasis you return to whenever you need a breather?
I’d love to hear your Jephson Gardens story.
