A little taste of a holiday, not far from home

Stratford-upon-Avon feels like a mini holiday to me. It’s not far from home, but somehow a visit feels like a proper day out — whether I’m there with friends, family or just taking myself off for the day.

I love strolling along the river, wandering through the shops, sitting with a cocktail by the water, finding a good pub and soaking up the history and atmosphere.

And I always find myself drawn back to the river.

The river at the heart of it

I wanted to capture that feeling of a day in Stratford — the river, boats and people, the theatre, church, trees, old buildings and, of course, the big wheel.

Not one particular view, but all the little things that make Stratford feel like Stratford.

There’s something about being by the river that makes you slow down. Boats drift past, people paddle and row, walkers wander along the water and others simply sit and watch.

Nowhere to be, plenty to see.

Your Stratford story

When I took the finished painting to the markets, I loved seeing people recognise their own Stratford in it.

They spotted familiar places and started telling me their stories — family days by the river, favourite walks, theatre trips, summer afternoons and special memories.

That’s what I love about painting places. I might start with my memories of somewhere, but everyone brings their own.
